Course Description:
In this course, students will be introduced to works by Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Kiowa, Cree, Lakota, Navaho, Coeur d’Alene, etc., writers. The class will discuss what it means to be labeled Native American, Indian, or Aborigine. The class will look at the clash of cultures when Europeans met the peoples already living in what came to be the United States. The class will also look at the different cultures covered by the label “Native American.” We will discuss the use and abuse of stereotype.
Students will explore what power naming has. The class will discuss culture, ethnicity, and race, and explore what these terms mean. The class will discuss how cultures, ethnic groups and different races meet, how they act/react with one another, what they give one another, etc.
