Generative AI

A guide to generative AI (artificial intelligence) and its impact on higher education.

Helpful Hints

  • Upload graphics along with a prompt like "can you provide a text summary of this graphic?" It can be helpful for generating alt text.

  • Provide as much context as possible. Name the course topic and the level (undergraduate x00-level), and provide one example that can serve as a guide. And don't shy away from having a conversation -- ask for adjustments and clarifications, provide feedback (those are too advanced, this audience is more entry-level), etc.

Example Prompts for Faculty

Course Development & Design

  1. “Generate a syllabus for an [Introductory/Advanced] course on [subject] that includes learning objectives, assignments, grading criteria, and a weekly schedule.”
  2. “Create a module outline for a [discipline] course on [topic] that follows a structured learning path, including key concepts, activities, and assessments.”
  3. “Draft a course description for [course title] that is engaging, student-friendly, and aligns with accreditation requirements.”
  4. “Suggest a sequence of learning activities that scaffold knowledge in a [level] course on [topic].”
  5. “Transform these lecture notes into a structured, engaging online learning module.”
  6. "I'm working to develop more creative ways for students to engage in online discussion boards in my upper-level undergraduate class on [insert subject]. I'd like you to provide suggestions on how to improve my prompts, my design of the discussion boards, and different ways to include more critical responses among students and different views posted on the board. I'll give you my current prompts and I would like you to suggest ways to improve student engagement. Is that clear? What else do you need to know to complete this task?"

Lecture & Teaching Materials

  1. “Summarize this academic article in plain language for undergraduate students.”
  2. “Generate a list of real-world examples that illustrate the concept of [topic] in [field].”
  3. “Provide an engaging explanation of [complex topic] using an analogy that students would understand.”
  4. “Create a short quiz (with an answer key) to test students’ understanding of [topic].”
  5. “Rewrite this passage from my lecture notes to be more accessible and engaging for students with different learning styles.”

Assessments & Grading

  1. “Develop a rubric for grading student essays on [topic] that includes criteria for content, organization, and writing mechanics.”
  2. “Create a case study-based exam question for a [discipline] course on [topic].”
  3. “Rewrite this exam question to be clearer and avoid ambiguity while maintaining rigor.”
  4. “Generate sample student responses (excellent, satisfactory, and needs improvement) for this discussion question.”
  5. “Suggest alternative assessment methods for evaluating student learning on [topic] without using traditional exams.”
  6. "I would like to create an assignment for a 200-level college course in C++ programming. The topic is [insert topic] -- how to create class types, complete with data and member functions. One example assignment theme would be to create a class type which defined rational numbers (fractions), complete with member functions for the overloaded operators. Can you suggest three other possible themes, the goal being to develop a useful class type of a real-world thing we would like to represent abstractly?"

Student Engagement & Support

  1. “Generate discussion questions that encourage critical thinking on [topic].”
  2. “Create a debate prompt on [controversial topic in discipline] that encourages students to explore multiple perspectives.”
  3. “Draft an announcement for my course encouraging students to seek help with their assignments and highlighting available resources.”
  4. “Suggest interactive classroom activities to reinforce learning about [topic].”
  5. “Provide ideas for incorporating AI tools into student assignments ethically and effectively.”

Time-Saving AI Prompts for Faculty

  1. “Summarize key points from this meeting transcript and provide action items.”
  2. “Convert this detailed lecture into a concise PowerPoint outline with bullet points.”
  3. “Reword this email to a student to be professional but supportive.”
  4. “Generate a professional but friendly response to a student asking for an extension due to personal issues.”
  5. “Suggest ways to make this reading assignment more accessible for students with disabilities.”
