Introduction to Prepositions

So, what is a preposition?

That is not necessarily an easy question to answer.

On one hand, prepositions can be those pesky words (such as for, to, at, around, etc.) that can cause so many headaches for English Language Learners.

On the other hand, prepositions are essentially words that help establish relationships between two things.

The University of Maine at Augusta

"At" is a preposition here. It demonstrates the university's relationship to Augusta by showing where the university is (Augusta).

Below is a good video that introduces prepositions.

Still a little confused about what a preposition is?

That is okay. Perhaps it is best to look at prepositions on a case-by-case basis by viewing our pages on specific prepositions.
